2 in 10 women and 1 in 10 men experience depression.

Women are nearly twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression.

Hormones cause mood changes naturally in women. But depression is more than normal mood change. Contributing factors include the changes experienced during puberty, including increased school pressure, conflict with family, and emerging identity issues; premenstrual syndrome, life changes with pregnancy and postpartum issues, perimenopause and menopause. Other life circumstances unique to women can contribute to depression including unequal power and status, work overload and sexual or physical abuse.
